Las Vegas Sands is once again trying to legalize commercial casinos in Texas. The operator plays a leading role in the Texas Destination Resort Alliance and has filed a petition with lawmakers.
This is not the first attempt by this operator to influence local gambling laws. So, in 2022, the company created the Texas Sands political action committee, where it invested $2 million to legalize gambling activities.
The state allows only lotteries, bingo and some types of betting. Casinos can also operate, but only on Indian reservations. They are run by tribes that have been recognized at the federal level. Local laws require a two-thirds vote in the state House and Senate to approve legislative amendments. Only after this the issue of legalizing commercial casinos can be put to a vote.
The petition, filed by the Texas Destination Resort Alliance, indicates a desire to provide local residents with quality entertainment, fine dining and luxury resorts. This will bring billions of dollars from border states back into Texas to boost the economy.
By the way, in December 2023, Las Vegas Sands bought a controlling stake in the Texas basketball club Dallas Mavericks.
